Prevention in a nutshell
Barrier methods, such as condoms and internal condoms, help protect against many sexually transmitted infections.
They create a barrier between bodies during sex and reduce the risk of transmission. They are simple to use and important for everyone's health.
Window period: when to get an HIV test?
After a possible exposure, it is important to wait the right amount of time before taking an HIV test.
The body takes some time to develop antibodies: this period is known as the "window period".
🔸 After 1 month: the result is already fairly reliable.
🔸 After 3 months: the result is definitive.
🔸 A test taken immediately after a risk exposure can detect a prior infection, but does not rule out a recent one.
In the event of a positive test result, laboratory confirmation will always be required.
U=U – Undetectable = Untransmittable
A person living with HIV on effective therapy with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus sexually.
It is a scientific and social revolution: U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) means living without fear, having sex with awareness, and overcoming stigma.
PrEP – Profilassi Pre-Esposizione
PrEP is a medication that, when taken regularly or on an "on-demand" basis (only before and after a risk encounter), protects against HIV with very high effectiveness.
It is safe, well tolerated and available in Italy with a medical prescription.
For more information, contact us and we will direct you to PrEP services in your area.
